Sample Acceptable Use Policies

(originally created for Mountaintop Montessori)

We all know that technology is changing faster than ever and keeping up with where it is heading is a challenge. Today's challenges include things like trying to deal effectively with access to wifi-enabled cell phones and the plethora of social networking sites. Children, having grown up in this technology saturated environment, are quite comfortable journeying into these new digital frontiers, but often lack the discernment skills necessary to traverse this digital world safely and independently. To be effective guides on this digital journey, we need to be informed and provide a safe environment for exploration.

At Mountaintop Montessori, we value the role that digital media and technology can play in the classroom and look for ways to integrate this learning into the curriculum. We also want to provide a safe place for children to get real-world, hands on experience with new digital frontiers. Toward that end, it is extremely important to have a common understanding of what is acceptable use of technology at Mountaintop Montessori. That is the purpose of the Acceptable Use Policy. In addition, we have this wiki available to share the philosophy of technology use at Mountaintop Montessori, specific technologies that are available for use, guidelines for using this technology for staff & students, real-world/scenario-based examples of how these guidelines might come up, space for interactive discussion of the AUP and ability to modify the AUP as new technologies surface.
